Energy-Efficient Home Improvements

HVAC systems seem like an obvious place to start – what do we need to look for?

Upgrading to new energy-efficient HVAC systems can drastically reduce your energy consumption. These systems come with energy-efficient components such as ECM blower motors, smart thermostats, multi-stage furnaces, and condensing units. Their filters help maintain indoor air quality. Upgrading to new, environmentally friendly refrigerant contributes to lowering the Global Warming Potential (GWP).

What are some things we can do with our appliances?

First and foremost, you can upgrade to newer, more energy-efficient appliances. Looking for the Energy Star label on a new appliance is a big must. You can also run the appropriate cycle for the job at hand, such as lighter or cold washing loads or a faster dishwasher cycle. These seemingly small things can really help cut down on energy and water consumption.

Many might not think about making plumbing more environmentally-friendly. What can we do here?

One of the best places is with toilets. Most new toilets are either 1.6 gallons or 1.28 gallons per flush. In comparison, many older toilets use 3.5 gallons or more. If you still have these older toilets, change them out to save water and help lower your water bill.

What can we do for electrical upgrades?

The number one thing we can all do is use LED bulbs for lighting. They can use 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.* Smart thermostats for heating and cooling are also a wise choice.

What are some things we can do all around the house to improve energy efficiency?

  • Seal air leaks around windows, doors, floors, walls, and fireplaces
  • Add insulation to the attic, crawl space or basement
  • Install to energy-efficient windows
  • Add skylights
  • Upgrade household appliances to Energy Star qualified products
